KitchenAid dishwasher not cleaning dish’s on top rack?

KitchenAid dishwasher model # KUDP01FLWH06 top rack not cleaning dish’s. Home owner said unit was working great until approx two week ago they noticed the top rack dish’s were coming out dirty.The dishwasher would fill, wash and drain but there was a loud grinding noise they had not heard before.

When you hear a grinding noise coming from the dishwasher the first thing you think of is bad motor although that is not always the case.

After removing the bottom rack, upper wash tower and lower wash assembly it was very clear the bottom sump wash completely clogged with tooth picks, glass, pop corn seeds and other debris.

Although there is a chopper blade in the bottom of most machines, dishwashers are not designed to chop these types of objects. We started vacuuming out the sump assembly and found a large tooth pick that was lodged in the chopper blade (grinding noise). The blade was broken and the screen was clogged, water was not able to travel to the top rack at this point.

I finished cleaning out the sump and installed a new chopper blade. The customer was back to there normal wash routing for that nights dinner dish’s.
