Winter months with cold temps can create a good number of issues with refrigerator located in out door conditions. Many people have an extra refrigerator located in there garage for extra food storage and have little to next to no problems with food loss. Older refrigerator are much better for this purpose because they have dual temp controls for the freezer and refrigerator sections.

 Newer top mount refrigerators in particular have only one temp control and it is located in the refrigerator section. This creates a problem in cold weather as for the outside temps can fall below 38 degrees. Normal operating temps for the refrigerator section is 38 to 40 degrees. See the issue? If the temp control is located in the refrigerator section and the temps are below 38 degrees the unit will not turn on. The compressor now is turned off and the freezer items start to thaw.

 Some manufactures have a fix for this issue but others do not. Make sure when purchasing a refrigeration unit for your garage you let your sales person know.
